There are always a multitude of programs, events, announcements surrounding NCCS. Here's a brief update of just a few to help keep you informed.
Lang Lodge Update
Despite a very challenging winter building season this year, our team of contractors lead by Ryan Smith of RTS Construction have our project on time and on budget!! With completion scheduled for May and programs scheduled back to back, time is quickly passing. The project is at 60% completion and we are working diligently to raise the final $500,000 in funds prior to groundbreaking.
The $2,560,000 Camp Newaygo renovation project employs 70% Newaygo County contractors. A significant impact for our local economy in these challenging times and speaks of our commitment to our Newaygo County communities and businesses.
We will be looking for volunteers to help move kitchen supplies, office equipment, program supplies, furniture and so much more back into the newly expanded and winterized Lang Lodge in early spring. You can view pictures of the process at camp's
photo gallery.
Tightening Our Belts
Over the past 9 months the NCCS board and staff have devoted increased time and attention to NCCS operational efficiencies. We have reduced our staff by 4 ½ positions, reduced $25,000 in building and operating costs for the 2009 budget, and implemented new energy saving efficiencies. We continue to work to find new and innovative ways to deliver our programs and services in the most cost efficient manner without jeopardizing quality.
Boys & Girls Club Scholarship
It is a proven fact that engaging young people in healthy, active, adult run out-of-school time programs has a great deal of benefits. Kids are less likely to engage in risky behavior, more successful in school, develop an increased sense of civic and community engagement and are more likely to graduate from high school and move onto higher education.
Due to the challenges of our Michigan economy, several of our families are no longer able to afford to send their children to “The Alley” our Boys and Girls Club programs in Fremont and Newaygo. If you are able or know someone who might be interested please do consider this great investment in our kid’s future. For just $10 a week, you can provide a high quality nationally recognized program to kids who are currently spending their afterschool hours alone at home. Join us in making certain that ALL children have an opportunity to join Boys and Girls Club programs!
Welcome Sue Squire
Sue joins the NCCS team as our new Development Director. Sue comes to us from Davenport University and the Grand Rapids Public Library. Sue and her husband split their time between Pentwater and their home in Brooks Township, where they enjoy trout fishing. You can read more about her on the
Philanthrophy Blog.
In Closing
Please join NCCS in checking on your neighbors, those that are disenfranchised and those that are less fortunate. Make certain they are safe and if you are able share your good fortune and friendship with those who need you to extend a helping hand.
