They began their afternoon on January 15 enjoying the MLK Day celebration at the Fremont Area District Library. The event included a performance by the Fremont High School Choir, and a moving speech given by the Reverend Charles W. Poole, Sr., a friend and peer of Dr. King. After the celebration, they headed out into the community to “give back” to several organizations that have been very generous to NCCS over the years.
“We would love to have been able to go out and give back to every organization, and individual who has supported NCCS over the years, but quite frankly – that list is just too long,” said Bev Cassidy, NCCS Executive Director. “We decided to pick one community a year and started off with Fremont this year, and given our short timetable and the small size of our staff, we had to limit ourselves to just six locations,” she continued.
After careful consideration, NCCS chose to send staff to the following locations – Daisybrook Elementary School where they took down holiday decorations, and hung cork strips down several hallways; the Newaygo County Council for the Arts (NCCA) where they cleaned, sorted and painted a classroom; Fremont High School where they organized and filed library books; All Saints Church where they mopped, cleaned, and changed many hard-to-reach light bulbs; Fremont Middle School where they cleaned and organized the art room, and hung artwork down several hallways; and First Reformed Church where they painted basement hallways. |
